Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is everywhere right now — longevity podcasts, biohacking forums, your neighbor's Instagram. I did 40 sessions. Some of the claims are real. Some are not.

I spent 60 hours inside a pressurized tube breathing pure oxygen. Not because I'm adventurous. Because I'm stubborn, and I wanted to know if HBOT actually does what the podcasters say it does.

Forty sessions. 90 minutes each. At 2.0 ATA — that's about the same pressure you'd feel at 33 feet underwater. The chamber was comfortable, the ear-popping was manageable, and I caught up on a lot of reading.

How It Works (The Chemistry)

Under increased atmospheric pressure, oxygen dissolved in your blood plasma spikes 10-15x normal levels. This plasma-dissolved oxygen reaches tissues where red blood cells can't easily go — areas with compromised circulation, damaged vasculature, or inflammation. The downstream effects include neovascularization (new blood vessel formation), reduced edema, enhanced white blood cell activity, and upregulated growth factors for tissue repair.

As a chemist, I respect the mechanism. Henry's Law isn't controversial. More pressure, more gas dissolves. The question is whether that translates to clinical outcomes.

What the Evidence Actually Supports

For wound healing — particularly diabetic foot ulcers — the evidence is strong. A 2015 Cochrane review found HBOT significantly reduced major amputation risk. That's as solid as it gets in evidence-based medicine.

For traumatic brain injury, a 2022 RCT in PLOS ONE (PMID: 35085321) showed improved cognitive function after 60 sessions at 2.0 ATA. Promising, but they're calling for larger multi-center trials. Fair.

The longevity angle? A 2020 Tel Aviv University study showed HBOT lengthened telomeres and decreased senescent cells. Fascinating, but preliminary. Don't let anyone sell you anti-aging certainty from one study.

My Honest Experience

After 40 sessions, I noticed improved sleep quality, faster recovery from workouts, and better mental clarity in the mornings. Placebo? Maybe partially. But the sleep improvement was measurable — my HRV data backed it up.

Cost: $200-$400 per session where I went. Insurance covers FDA-approved indications but not off-label use. That's real money. Make sure you're going somewhere with qualified medical supervision and properly maintained equipment.
