How Often Should You Do Red Light Therapy? A Science-Based Dosing Guide

The answer depends on what you're treating, the device you're using, and the wavelength. Here's a dosing guide based on clinical trial protocols — not marketing claims.

How Often Should You Do Red Light Therapy? A Science-Based Dosing Guide — Treatment Guides

This is one of the most common questions I get, and the answer isn't one-size-fits-all. Clinical trials use different frequencies depending on the condition, wavelength, and device power. Here's what the evidence supports.

The General Rule: 3-5 Sessions Per Week

Most RCTs use a frequency of 3-5 sessions per week. Daily use is common in shorter studies, while every-other-day protocols are typical for longer trials (16-24 weeks).

The biological reasoning: cells need time between sessions to complete the repair and growth processes that RLT triggers. Constant stimulation without recovery can lead to diminishing returns (the biphasic dose response).

Dosing by Condition

Skin Rejuvenation / Anti-Aging

  • Wavelength: 630-633 nm
  • Frequency: 3x/week
  • Session duration: 10-20 min
  • Dose: 3-6 J/cm²
  • Timeline: Visible improvement at 8-12 weeks (Wunsch & Matuschka, 2014)

Hair Growth

  • Wavelength: 650-660 nm
  • Frequency: Every other day (3-4x/week)
  • Session duration: 15-25 min
  • Dose: 3-6 J/cm²
  • Timeline: Measurable at 16 weeks, continued improvement to 24+ weeks

Joint Pain / Osteoarthritis

  • Wavelength: 810-850 nm (near-infrared for depth)
  • Frequency: 3-5x/week during acute phase, 2-3x/week for maintenance
  • Session duration: 10-15 min per joint
  • Dose: 6-12 J/cm²
  • Timeline: Pain reduction often within 2-4 weeks

Muscle Recovery / Athletic Performance

  • Wavelength: 810-850 nm
  • Frequency: Before or immediately after exercise
  • Session duration: 5-10 min per muscle group
  • Dose: 3-6 J/cm²
  • Note: Pre-exercise application may be more effective than post-exercise (Ferraresi et al., 2012)

Wound Healing

  • Wavelength: 630-660 nm
  • Frequency: Daily or every other day
  • Session duration: 5-15 min
  • Dose: 2-4 J/cm²
  • Timeline: Accelerated healing within 1-2 weeks

The Biphasic Dose Response: More Is Not Better

This is the most important concept in RLT dosing. Known as the Arndt-Schulz law, the relationship between dose and effect follows an inverted U-curve:

  • Too little: No therapeutic effect
  • Optimal window: Maximum benefit (3-60 J/cm² depending on target)
  • Too much: Inhibitory effect — actually slows healing and reduces benefit

This means doing RLT twice a day or holding a device on your skin for an hour is likely counterproductive. More sessions at moderate dose beats fewer sessions at high dose.

Professional vs. At-Home Frequency

Professional centers: Usually 2-3x/week is sufficient because clinical devices have higher power density. Each session delivers a full therapeutic dose quickly.

At-home devices: You may need 4-5x/week because lower power density means each session delivers a smaller dose. Compensate with slightly longer sessions and higher frequency.

When to Stop or Reduce

Once you've achieved your goal, you can transition to maintenance:

  • Reduce to 1-2x/week for ongoing benefit
  • Take periodic breaks (1-2 weeks off every 3-4 months)
  • If you notice diminishing returns, reduce frequency rather than increasing
