What is a CBD Edible?
CBD Edibles are CBD infused products that provide effects through consumption. Popularized as home-made brownies in the 1950’s, edibles have evolved into vegan, super potent, anxiety-relieving, sour raspberry gummies…Edibles are evolving at a rapid rate, they’re modern, targeted and efficient.
The superstar cannabinoid that is CBD is quickly becoming just as popular as THC, and the selection of cannabis-infused edibles on the market is reflecting that shift.
This article is going to teach you what to look for before buying a CBD edible, and hopefully, answer all of your CBD edible questions. If you have any questions please leave a comment below, I’ll answer you within 24 hours. Happy reading!
Why Should I Ingest CBD in Edible Form?
For many people wishing to consume CBD, edibles are an easy alternative to other routes of administration, such as vaping and smoking.
In addition, some patients cannot or simply choose not to consume their marijuana or CBD in whole leaf form. Some people don’t like the taste or have respiratory issues preventing them from smoking/vaping, etc.
On average, consuming CBD through edibles lasts hours longer than doing so through smoking or vaporizing, and as CBD is used for medicinal purposes and not recreational, the duration of the relief matters a lot.
Two thumbs up to CBD edibles for lasting a long time, and setting in rather quickly.
Plus, edibles provide a fun, new way to consume CBD.
Will CBD Edibles Get You High?
No, CBD will not make you high but it can cause you to fail a drug test. If you are taking CBD from a cannabis plant and not a hemp plant, check the THC %.
CBD may be a cannabis compound, but many are surprised to find that it does not cause a “high.”
Instead, CBD offers consumers a mellow uplifting mood with a sense of positive, alert energy.
With its long-lasting nature, CBD can provide prolonged relief from mild pains and daily stresses.
CBD is a great option for anyone hoping to enjoy the benefits of cannabis without an over-the-top psychoactive experience.
Are There Different Types of CBD Edibles?
Yes, There are three common types of cannabinoid edibles: gastrointestinal, oral, and hybrid.
The CBD in gastrointestinal edibles, such as food products or pills, is absorbed through the stomach. Although gastrointestinal edibles may take up to two hours to fully kick in, the effects typically last for much longer than the other types of edibles and can provide as much as eight hours of relief.
Baked edibles like cookies and brownies can last up to 16 hours, oil-based edibles like gummies are immediately absorbed in your mouth and wear off in about 2-4 hours. Check out recommended dosages for a variety of CBD products.
Why is it important to have shorter effects? Edibles are all about place and time.
Brennan Kilbane wrote in GQ that: “gummies are the drug you can do at work” because it doesn’t get you high. “And the secret to my happiness is a cannabinoid cousin of THC called CBD.”
Brennan continues with: “Here’s how it works: Every morning when I get into my office, I pop a frosted CBD gummy into my mouth for breakfast. Then, I proceed to have a wonderful day.”
“My CBD gummies, meanwhile, live in the top drawer of my desk. When I take one, I feel slightly but markedly better. My chair feels like it is mangling my body less. It’s harder to make a fist. It’s easier to navigate an hour or two of bullshit, which means it’s easier to do my job. It doesn’t matter if anybody notices that I am 10% more pleasant, because I feel 10% more pleasant, anyway.”
“Simply: Every day is a better day with CBD edibles.”
Are There any Side Effects of CBD?
June 2017, the national center for biotechnology information published: “The safety and side effects of Cannabidiol, a review of clinical data and relevant animal studies.” Here is a summary of what NCBI published:
In general, the often described favorable safety profile of CBD in humans was confirmed and extended by the reviewed research.
The majority of studies were performed for treatment of epilepsy and psychotic disorders. Here, the most commonly reported side effects were tiredness, diarrhea, and changes in appetite/weight. In comparison with other drugs, used for the treatment of these medical conditions, CBD has a better side effect profile.
This could improve patients’ compliance and adherence to treatment.
What’s the difference between CBD edibles from hemp plants and edibles from cannabis plants?
By the simplest definition, there is no difference between CBD obtained from either type of plant. However, there are still differences in the final product of hemp-derived CBD oil vs marijuana-derived CBD oil. Different methods of processing can also significantly alter the final CBD content and chemical makeup.
The difference between THC levels in a hemp Cannabis Sativa plant and a marijuana Cannabis Sativa plant also plays a large role in determining its legality in the United States. Plants with high levels of THC remain illegal at the federal level, although state laws may vary. This means that marijuana-derived CBD is not legal in all 50 states.
On the other hand, hemp-derived CBD remains in a legal grey zone in all 50 states. It contains very low levels of THC, and there is some believe it falls under the passage of the 2014 Farm Bill. There is still some discrepancy between federal departments on the final legal status of hemp-derived CBD oil.
To start, both [male] hemp and [female] marijuana come from the same “mother” cannabis plant, as per United States Department Of Agriculture (USDA). Cannabis sativa can yield a [brother] hemp or a [sister] marijuana.
Brother hemp naturally contains a meager amount of THC that warrants a very small legal limit. Hemp can legally only have trace amounts of THC. The highest amount of THC that [brother] hemp can have is less than one-half of one percent (0.3%). With such low amounts of THC in hemp, you can get away with saying hemp has ZERO psychoactive THC. Making this statement closer to the truth than not.
If hemp has more than 0.3% THC, it’s legally not hemp and would require more strict regulations like sister marijuana. If you are looking for a THC free edible go with a hemp-based CBD product. And, if you want to feel minor effects from THC + CBD then you need a cannabis-derived CBD product.
How Long Does it Take for CBD Edibles to Kick In?
CBDinstead made a nice infographic detailing when CBD kicks in:
If you want to learn more about how long each type of CBD edible takes to kick in than you should check out a recent article I wrote about CBD gummies after I tasted over 15 brands, and why I feel they are the ideal CBD edible.
If you are looking for an instant edible with a shorter lifespan I’d take a gummy, if you want an edible that lasts all day and is mild, I would go with a baked good or CBD drink.
How Long do CBD Edibles Last?
Baked CBD edibles like cookies and brownies can last up to 10 hours, oil-based CBD edibles like gummies are immediately absorbed in your mouth and wear off in about 2-4 hours. My friends and I typically choose gummies or hard candies when we are at work. Why? They kick in fast and peak for about 2.5 hours max. It’s a nice way to soothe a tough moment.
Whereas baked edibles are perfect for a day off. They offer longer effects, not necessarily stronger than gummies, but definitely longer and harder to just snap out of. Edibles are perfect for a long “me day.”
In my article on why I believe gummies are the perfect edible, I wrote: Being able to control the amount of time and serving size of your edible is key to when you can take it. Gummies give you the flexibility and freedom to consume CBD anywhere, anytime.
Feeling confident that you know when your CBD will wear off, changes your entire mindset going into whether or not you should consume a CBD edible.
What are the Best CBD Edibles?
This is a personal list, I tried over 50 edibles in California, Oregon, and Washington in May 2018. Here are my 7 favorite CBD edibles:
1. The CBD edible I’m most likely to have in my freezer 24/7 is KIVA’s ginger dark chocolate.
One of the most trusted and loved brands in the THC industry, KIVA has finally made their first CBD bar, and boy oh boy is it delicious. The ginger is a nice counter to the earthiness of the cannabis in the chocolate. By far my favorite chocolate CBD product, and if I had to say, this is my overall favorite CBD product.
The only downside, for some: This bar does contain THC and is currently available only in California. The bar contains 20 pieces, each piece has 5mg CBD/5mg THC. It’s the perfect ratio for a nice, immediate, relax. This bar takes the edge off immediately, it allows you to think clearly. I pack a few KIVA squares in my lunch if work gets too stressful, I pop a square in and 20 minutes later I feel great.
Here is a statement from KIVA on how the environment their CBD is grown in: “Our CBD cannabis grows in a natural ecosystem of fruit groves and orchards. This diversity and symbiotic relationship between plants and insects build natural immunity, ensuring our plants are hearty, healthy and thriving in their natural environment.”
KIVA is the first company to create a PDF that I actually enjoyed reading. It talks about their journey to finding the perfect CBD strain. Great read, you’ll enjoy it I promise.
If you’re in California and want an amazing CBD product with THC than KIVA is the product for you. To be honest this was the only chocolate I liked for flavor and effect. There were a few bars that were effective but tasted terrible.
2. WYLD Strawberry CBD Enhanced Gummies 150mg
When it comes to gummies there are two brands that I like the most. First, WYLD, which we’ll talk about now and second is LordJones.
WYLD gummies are not very common and quite hard to purchase. But if you can find them, you have to buy them.
The Strawberry Gummies are made with real fruit and enhanced with cannabis-derived CBD oil. Relaxing your body while keeping your mind sharp and alert. It’ s the go-to gummy if you are looking to decompress or take the edge off.
WYLD also has CBD/THC products. But if you’re looking for a nice CBD product that is flavorful and effective, I’d go with WYLD’s strawberry gummy.
3. The second gummy on the list is LordJones. This brand is endorsed by the likes of Mandy Moore, Kristen Bell, Busy Phillips, Olivia Wilde, Jessica Seinfeld and Stacy London. It’s a huge brand and growing fast. Jump on the bandwagon!
I had to take this amazing description from the LordJones site: Sigur Rós and Lord Jones come together to bring you medicated gumdrops inspired by the flavors of foraged Icelandic berries: wild blackberries, strawberries, and blueberries.
Our pure CBD gumdrops are made by hand in small batches from five simple ingredients: natural fruit essences, gelatin, citric acid, sugar and the finest full-spectrum phytocannabinoid-rich CBD extract.
CBD (cannabidiol) provides relief from pain and anxiety, acts as a mood stabilizer and promotes a calm sense of well-being. Each gumdrop contains 20mg of CBD with no artificial colors or flavors.
Our gumdrops are Hemp-derived, non-psychoactive CBD; contain no THC, and are Gluten free.
All of our gumdrops are handmade in small batches from five simple ingredients: natural fruit flavors, sugar, citric acid, gelatin, full-spectrum phytocannabinoid-rich CBD extract
This beautiful product is delicious and effective. This is my go-to gift for friends birthdays. The packaging is luxurious and the product inside is even better. This is a must try. Bonus tip: check out the skincare products Hollywood is raving about.
4. Honeypot CBD pairs perfectly with any tea, dessert, fruit or anything else you can put honey on! This is the only CBD honey I’ve ever used, it came highly recommended via a cannabis expert in California.
If you want a cannabis honey, without the psychoactive effects of THC, then Honey Pot is perfect for you.
Made with California Wildflower Honey, and Cannabis Infused Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil.
This delicious CBD product is available in 3 sizes: 8 fl oz (>250mg CBD), 1.5 fl oz (>50mg CBD), and the honey stick (>5 mg CBD).
I actually use the regular honey and the honey stick. The honey stick is a nice substitute for caffeine. I suck on it while I work, and I’ve found that the honey + CBD combo is the perfect boost for me.
Give it a shot!
5. The next product on this list is my wife’s favorite. ICE POT-O-COFFEE CBD.
This deliciously full flavored, smooth coffee experience offers a gourmet-quality CBD infused drink that is both convenient and super effective.
This bad boy is strong. I feel relaxed and comfortable for about 6 hours after I drink.
Noting to strong, actually just right. This delicious drink is a must for anyone that suffers from anxiety, this cold drink will keep you relaxed and happy all day long.
6. My final edible recommendation is Mr. Moxey’s mints.
Delectable, portable and discreet, Mr. Moxey’s Mints are your personal valet for wellbeing.
Mr. Moxey’s Mints have been the best selling edible for over 12 months in Washington State; popular among those that want the right amount of THC and CBD to suit their productive lives.
These microdosed mints enable you to choose just the right amount of cannabinoids to suit your system and create a sense of homeostasis in your body.
The ginger and peppermint flavors are THC-free. This is a must-have for all mint lovers.
